SUMMARY:Treating separately collected biowaste in MBTs - On the ground with Domantas Tracevičius
DESCRIPTION:Separate collection of biowaste is a significant requisite for the implementation of an effective and sustainable waste sorting system that’s on the way towards a circular economy. \nAmong other regulations\, its importance is proven by Article 22 of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) which requires cities\, all over the EU\, to set up separate collection schemes for organic waste by the end of December 2023. \nHowever\, in order to process its treatment correctly\, specific infrastructure is needed. This does not necessarily mean having to invest in the construction of new dedicated plants\, unsustainable for the huge amount of costs and resources required. \nThe solution stands in optimising existing structures\, like MBT (Material Biological Treatment) plants\, to treat separately collected organic waste\, bringing numerous benefits for both the municipality’s pocket and the community as a whole. \nBut how is it done? What are the costs\, challenges and benefits of this choice? \nIn this new MiZA free webinar\, together with Domantas Tracevičius\, head of the environmental NGO Ziedine ekonomika\, we will take you on a virtual tour to the Lithuanian ARATC (Alytus Region Waste Management Centre)\, which runs the optimised Alytus MBT plant. \nWe will take a look at the entire ARATC plant\, from the biological treatment section to the mechanical sorting facility to have a first-hand experience of how such plants are structured in order to treat separately collected organic waste and how they work\, discussing the challenges\, costs and benefits that this transformation entails. \nDuring the webinar\, participants will get the opportunity to ask questions to the speaker and to the ARATC representative. \nYour data is going to be treated in accordance with our privacy policy. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn:  \n\nHow an MBT plant can be optimised to treat different waste streams more efficiently.\nWhat are the costs\, benefits and things to consider for such transformation.\nHow the residual treatment can be further optimised once the organics fraction is reduced through separate collection.\n\n

SUMMARY:Diverting biowaste from disposal and turning it into fertility – A conversation with Enzo Favoino
DESCRIPTION:Article 22 of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) requires that municipalities\, all over the EU\, set up separate collection schemes for organic waste – or biowaste. In particular\, biowaste should be either separated and recycled at source\, or collected separately and not mixed with other types of waste by December 2023. \nThe efficient separate collection of biowaste is the key step governments can take to improve the overall separation and collection of waste. \nIn fact\, the separate collection of biowaste can help:\n• Avoid cross-contamination with other waste streams;\n• Ensure quality compost and recycling;\n• Divert waste from dumpsites and reduce methane emissions. \nIn this new MiZA free webinar\, we are sitting down with Enzo Favoino\, Chair of the Zero Waste Europe Scientific Committee\, to learn why biowaste is a fundamental chunk of circular economy and zero waste programmes and how article 22 of WFD obligation can actually become a great opportunity for municipalities to fine-tune their waste management systems. \nIn this webinar\, we will discuss: \n\nAll the approaches for processing biowaste\, from smallest to largest ones. A quick overview.\nArt. 22 of WFD and related obligation for separate collection of biowaste: not a nightmare\, but an opportunity to fine-tune the municipal waste service\, making it most performing. A few key operational hints.\nDispelling the myths around economic and environmental performances of separate management of biowaste.\nExamples from across Europe\, big cities and small villages\, Southern and Central Eastern Europe\, enlargement countries\, etc.\n\nParticipants will get an opportunity to ask questions to the speaker during the webinar. \nYour data is going to be treated in accordance with our privacy policy.

SUMMARY:ZW Live! Webinar - Are we entering an age of decomissioning in Europe?
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, we have seen a number of developments that would suggest decision-makers recognise that waste incineration is incompatible with long-term climate goals. Yet does this match with the reality on the ground? Are we still living through a time of waste incineration within a linear economy\, or are we entering an age of decommissioning? \nThis Zero Waste Europe‘s webinar will go into greater depth to answer these key questions: \n\nWhy is waste incineration incompatible with a circular economy and how is this becoming more recognised?\nIs waste incineration compatible with the increasing need for and adoption of climate supportive\, carbon-neutral policies?\nWhat is happening at the European level to prohibit funding and support for increasing incineration capacity?\nWhat are the transition strategies available for municipalities to help move away from incineration?\n\nUnfortunately\, the webinar platform has a maximum capacity of 100 virtual seats. Therefore\, to watch the webinar for free\, attendance on Zoom will be done on a first-come\, first-served basis\, meaning that only the first 100 people will be able to join on Zoom. However\, if you are not part of the first 100 who join at the start of the webinar\, then you can still follow the webinar live on Zero Waste Europe’s YouTube channel. \nWe will ensure questions posed on our Youtube channel are still relayed to the speakers. \nThe speakers’ presentations will be available for free in the following days. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused. \nYour data is going to be treated in accordance with Zero Waste Europe’s privacy policy.
