The MiZA Carbon Calculator is the perfect tool for European municipalities to measure the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission impacts from current and future waste policies with a unique focus on waste preventionreuse, preparation for reuse, recycling and disposal activities, going beyond just waste management calculations.

Becoming a zero waste city is a long process, which involves continuous work, time, money and effort.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to know if your zero waste actions are truly sustainable and environmental-friendly, and for that, you need data to make informed decisions.

By increasing the heat in the atmosphere, greenhouse gases (GhG) are the main responsible for global warming worldwide and that is why they are the most common way to measure the climate impacts of a policy.

With the possibility to count the so-called ‘avoided and added emissions’ calculations – the calculations of the emissions generated by the avoided and added processes and products implemented during the city’s zero waste transition – the MiZA Carbon Calculator is the first tool, tailored for European municipalities, to offer a holistic lifecycle approach to calculate the benefits of current and future zero waste strategies and scenarios.

How does it work?

Making carbon footprint calculations is very time consuming and requires a lot of expertise to get it right. Alongside the tool, you will gain access to our technical support on both the use of the tool and the analysis of the outcome. The number of hours included depends on the subscription you chose.

You can choose between three different plans:

  1. Standard: 5 hours of expert support to guide you through the main aspects of the tool.
  2. Pro: 20 hours of expert support covering data collection, scenario forming and report writing.
  3. Turn-key: 50 hours of expert support to assist you in the data collection, scenario forming, report writing and result validation activities.

ATTENTION! To be able to use the software, two are the main requirements that have to be matched:

  1. Windows operating system and Microsoft Office license are required.
  2. Once downloaded, only the person who purchased the tool and has it on his/her laptop will have access to the Calculator.

The first step to start using the tool is to fill it in with your local waste management data.

The total amount of waste generated for the baseline year, the typical composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated within the study area, the amount of collected source-separated materials (e.g. glass, plastic, metals, paper and cardboard, organic material) and the information regarding the zero waste strategies (added and avoided processes) are just some of the data that needs to be collected and inserted into the tool.

Missing something? No worries, the Calculator has been equipped with lots of ready-made datasets and background assessments, based on European averages and estimations, for specific circular actions like, for example, replacing single-use cups with reusables or repairing computers.

The MiZA Carbon Calculator is an easy-to-use excel-based software, developed by Inèdit and powered by Zero Waste Europe to give you the most accurate results in less amount time, following the IPCC guidelines for comparable results and allowing you to visualise the contribution of your waste management policies towards reducing harmful emissions and estimate the potential environmental effect of different future scenarios.

From the datasets provided regarding present and future (‘what-if’) scenarios, the Calculator assesses the carbon balance of the zero waste strategies, identifying the changes in the city’s waste-related GhG emissions before and after implementing them. This will help you save money and time and make informed and environmentally conscious decisions.
