About Us
The Mission Zero Academy (MiZA) is ZWE’s hub for knowledge, tools, and capacity building. MiZA supports local authorities, organisations, and communities in implementing and accelerating zero waste strategies—through training, certification, and practical guidance. With 20 zero waste certified cities so far, over 60 cities committed and activities in over 20 countries, MiZA is seeking new Board members to help guide its next phase of development.
MiZA is a spin-off of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) and the two organizations collaborate closely.
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity to shape a mission-driven organisation committed to a just and community-powered transition to zero waste. We are currently a team of three Board members and are now looking to expand our governance and strategic capacity by recruiting two additional members.
We are particularly seeking candidates with professional backgrounds in:

However, we are also interested in hearing about other types of profiles. If you feel like you have something to offer to our mission as a board member, feel free to send an open application.
PROFILE 1: Marketing/Comms, PR & CSR Board Member
You are a natural storyteller and strategic communicator who knows how to build brands that inspire action. Knowledge and experience about setting up corporate partnerships for non-profit organizations is a bonus.
Desired experience:
- Brand development, positioning, and messaging
- Digital marketing strategies and platforms
- Building and managing media relationships and campaigns
- CSR programme design or partnerships with purpose-driven businesses
- Audience engagement, especially in sustainability or nonprofit sectors
- Ideally, experience with communications in multilingual or pan-European contexts
Your role will be key in shaping MiZA’s public voice, developing strategic partnerships, and supporting the team with outreach and visibility.
PROFILE 2: Education & Online Platforms Board Member
You are passionate about education and have experience in creating or managing online learning tools. You understand the dynamics of pedagogy, learning platforms, and how to translate complex ideas into engaging content and curriculum.
Desired experience:
- Background in education, ed-tech, instructional design, or curriculum development
- Experience working with or developing online learning platforms (e.g., Learning Management System, MOOC, blended learning)
- Understanding of adult education, municipal or professional training, or certifications
- Familiarity with sustainability education or environmental training is a plus
- Capacity to guide the development of accessible and scalable learning models
You’ll provide insight into MiZA’s educational offerings, helping us evolve our training, certification, and learning tools for greater impact. MiZA will in the near future explore the potential to become an official adult education centre.
