Circulandia

The project addresses the need to move away from linear production–consumption–waste models and towards circular approaches that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve soil health and biodiversity, shorten food supply chains, and decrease packaging waste. CIRCULANDIA contributes to the objectives of the European Green Deal and supports the European Commission’s Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI).

Objectives

The overall objective of CIRCULANDIA is to accelerate the transition towards resilient, regenerative, and circular food systems in Europe through scalable and transferable solutions.

The project aims to:

• Develop and demonstrate circular urban and regional food system solutions
• Promote regenerative farming practices and improve soil health
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and packaging waste
• Strengthen local food production and shorten supply chains
• Increase the use of reusable takeaway packaging systems
• Valorise local underused biostreams and side streams
• Support cities and regions in implementing circular economy solutions
• Create scalable replication models for wider European adoption

A key feature of the project is its three-level replication model, where solutions are first demonstrated in pilot cities, then adapted by replicator cities, and finally scaled further through multiplier regions preparing for future implementation.

Work Content

The project activities include:

• Scaling and replicating remote monitoring systems for carbon sequestration verification
• Supporting regenerative farming practices
• Sourcing and valorising local underused biostreams
• Demonstrating urban farming models
• Establishing local reusable packaging ecosystems
• Increasing citizen and consumer engagement in reusable takeaway packaging systems
