From expert to trainer

Climate change, sustainable development goals, regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, circular economy, ESG – do you know at least some of these topics at an expert level and can confidently name others? As an environmental expert, do you occasionally have to train and teach others? If you answered yes, then this training is just for you!

ENQUIRE ABOUT FUTURE SESSIONS

No public sessions are currently scheduled. If you are interested in this training for your organisation, please contact us to arrange a dedicated future session.

You’ve run dozens of workshops. Led countless training sessions. But do you actually know how people learn?

Most sustainability professionals mistake experience for teaching skill. The truth? There’s a massive gap between knowing your content and transferring knowledge effectively.

Our From Expert to Trainer program bridges that gap. Learn the science of adult learning and take your impact to the next level.

Who should attend?

  • You work as an expert (including a volunteer) in some environmental or sustainability field;
  • You have some experience in teaching and conducting workshops;
  • You want to develop your training skills so that your trainings and presentations are effective and make the participants think along and understand the topics better.

Upgrade your training skills. Amplify your impact.

Training topics:

  • The basics of how learning and memory works;
  • How to consider learners’ needs and create a motivating learning environment;
  • How to help change learners’ misconceptions;
  • How to effectively teach environmental topics;
  • How to better assess learning.

The training is created on the basis of the Zero Waste Trainer Curriculum developed by Zero Waste Estonia, Zero Waste Europe, Ekologi Brez Meja, Tallinn University and University of Life Sciences in Estonia.

After completing the course, you will:

  • Understand the basics of effective teaching and how memory works;
  • Understand the importance of making mistakes and know how to create opportunities for making mistakes in the learning process;
  • Understand how to support long-term learning instead of short-term performance;
  • Understand the importance of three basic psychological needs of learners and recognize and support at least some of them;
  • Understand why and how misunderstandings arise during learning;
  • Be able to use some ways to help change misconceptions about sustainability;
  • Understand the limits and possibilities of learning assessment;
  • Be able to assess the achievement of the learning outcomes of the planned learning activity at a general level.

What previous participants have said about the course:

“The training really helped me to get a good understanding about how learning works and how to best teach zero waste. It is also very transferable to other environmental topics and non-teaching situations, like discussions with politicians.”

“This is the time that you have a feeling that old educational schemes have been outdated, but now you feel yourself how you can be a change.“

“Valuable content, dedicated trainers, convenient formula – and overall great experience. Thanks to this training I feel much more confident not only as an educator but also as a learner. I wish we had been taught that at school!“

“This training will inspire you to rethink all your former workshop concepts and focus on true learning.“

The format of the training:

The training is organized in a hybrid manner to accommodate both the busy schedules and take advantage of the magic of in-person get togethers and the real life exchanges of fellow learners and trainers. This method also allows for learning and forgetting – a learning method in itself.

The course is kicked off by an introductory session and followed by 4 weekly interactive online sessions with the group, intermittent by self-study and homework. The programme culminates in 2.5 days of in-person workshops (typically held in Brussels). This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, form valuable networks, and spend time focusing on developing your skills. Specific dates and locations are arranged with your organisation upon booking.
